Mr Obala, a representative from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, as on Friday, 15th of November, lectured Corps Members in the Lagos NYSC camp about the illegal use of drugs, causes and implications.
He started with a brief history of the NDLEA and gave a run down of their strategic locations in Nigeria.
Mr Obala proceeded by defining drug and when it can be regarded as abused. He described drug as "any substance that can be taken through chewing, swallowing or injecting, which changes or modifies one's mood or behavior."
He explained that drug can be said to be abused when it is overdosed, underdosed and self-prescribed.
He further explained stages of drug abuse as, experimentation stage, manifestation stage and addiction stage.
After which he listed common types of drugs, which are; alcohol, cigarettes, kolanuts, carnabis, codeine, solvents, latrines, droppings of wall geckos, reptiles, heroine and steroids (performance enhancement drugs)
etc.
Thereafter, he gave examples of the dangers of drug abuse, explaining it can make humans infertile and it can also destroy the lungs and heart. Mentioning that drug abuse could lead to loss of life, Mr Obala made examples of superstars that have died as a result like, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse and others.
