As the country faces economic downturn due to the effect of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic, Corps Members serving in Onigbongbo, Ikeja area of Lagos State have distributed palliative items to indigent members of their host community.
The corps members who were led by the Lagos State National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Coordinator, Mr. Eddy Megwa and staff of the Secretariat, donated items such as beans, garri, salt and tomato paste among other items to Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) to cushion the effect of hunger from the economic effect of the global pandemic in the State.
The Chairman of Onigbogbo LCDA, Hon. Francis Babatunde Oke, while receiving the palliatives commended the NYSC for their efforts in assisting the government alleviate hunger in the community.
He said, while the NYSC remains an integral part in contributing to the development of the community since the beginning of the scheme, the LCDA would assist corps members in having a good service year.
He prayed that the coronavirus ends for things to fall into place and commended the corps member for their donation to the community.
The NYSC State Coordinator, who presented the palliatives, said the action of the corps members is part of a National response by the National Youth Service Corps to the pandemic.
"This is of course part of the vision of the NYSC, not only to solicit for favours from the local government council, we are also here to assist you in reaching to your rural populace, by way of palliatives, education or anything you want these young ones to do. Just give them the idea, they will expand the coast and get the job done for you.
"I had to come to officially hand over the items to you and for onward distribution to those beneficiaries in your community. I appreciate your good hand of fellowship to the NYSC," he said.
Megwa who commended the effort of the corps members, said they have been on the forefront in assisting the government address hunger in their host communities.
"Everyday in my WhatsApp platform, they keep asking me what they can do to affect the lives of their host communities in this covid-19 pandemic. This therefore gave rise to them coming together, soliciting for funds, even some of them contributing their allowance to make an impact in the community where they are serving. That is why they were able to get all those things we see there, and they are going to use it to affect the lives of the less privileged in the society," he added.
The Coordinator also appreciated the LCDA Chairman for accommodating the corps members and ensuring they have a memorable and eventful service year.
"I have been adequately briefed on how the LCDA has been of great and immense assistance to the course of the National Youthy Service Corps in the 6state, especially in the local government and I am very happy and commend the effort," he added.
