SAED: LAGOS NYSC CORPS MEMBERS BEGIN MOVE TO REDUCE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE.

The Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme (SAED) commenced today at the Lagos State National Youth Service Corp orientation camp,  with Corps Members set to learn the various life skills they require to become employers of labour.

According to estimate by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria records about 25.4 million unemployed graduates with diploma or degree qualification as at 2019, while the Nigeria Senate described the situation as such that requires "declaration of a national emergency."

Declaring  the 2020 Batch A stream one SAED programme open, the Lagos State NYSC Coordinator, Mr Eddy Megwa bemoaned the increasing number of unemployed graduates who lack entrepreneurial skill to create wealth, but rather wait for white collar jobs, which are not forthcoming.

He said most graduates, due to frustration of unemployment, leave the country to look for greener pastures in other countries where they end up losing their lives due to the harsh treatment they get as migrants, especially in Libya.

 He said with entrepreneurial skills, corps members would not be out of job, but be employers of labour, as part of the solution to reducing the unemployment burden in Nigeria.

 The state coordinator also  encouraged and advised corps members to pursue their passions and follow their hearts to achieve success. 

 He urged all corps members to fully get abreast with every skill that would be taught during the SAED  classes, which would help them become future aesthetic leaders, with expertise in different fields, to help promote employment rate in Nigeria.

He said the skills will not only make them  Chief Executive Officers and employers of labour, it would also change their lives, that of their family members and the world at large.

Meanwhile,  the SAED  programme was graced by organisations like Chartered Institute of Human Resources and Strategic Management (CIHRSM),  New Horizon Computer Learning Centers,  Institute of Advanced Entrepreneurship Research and Development, Nigeria,  ICAN amongst others.

  The participatory role of corps members deployed to the state was massive, as they engaged their lecturers of different discourse, asking and answering questions when they should.

Also, there was intensive lecture on the preventive measures of Sexual Transmitted Diseases  and Sexual Transmitted Infections, with regards to Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome by the  Kids and Teens Resource Centre.

Public health specialists from the centre demonstrated safe sex practices for the corps members, while urging them to avoid  unhealthy sex lifestyles that would expose them to sexually transmitted diseases and infections.

There was also inspection of exhibited products made by the serving corps members, which was led by the State coordinator and the NYSC management.

Also, serving corps members that engaged in the SAED programme gave testimonies of the benefits they have derived from the programme.

They urged other corps members to leavrage on the opportunities the SAED programme presents, in order not to add to the existing number of unemployed undergraduate.
