While citizens are still suffering from the harsh effect of the coronavirus pandemic on the economy, Corps members representing Surulere and Shomolu/Bariga Local Government Areas, on Tuesday distributed food items, hand sanitizers and face masks to indigent residents of Lagos State.

The corps members who were led by the Lagos State National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Coordinator, Mr. Eddy Megwa, presented food items, which include spaghetti, tomato paste, sugar, garri, Groundnut oil and noodles to cater for no fewer than 300 persons in Surulere, Shomolu and Bariga.
,
The State Coordinator, who commended the corps members, said they have continued to show their good character in line with their training, while he thanked the people in the communities for coming out to receive the items.

Meanwhile, the distribution of the covid-19 palliative was also dirstibuted to Kosofe and Ikorodu Local Government Areas simultaneously, where the State Coordinator was represented by the Deputy Director, Human Resources, Mr. Ndoma Agbo and the Assistant Director, Planning Research and Statistics, Mrs Margaret Omaji at both LGAs respectively.

Speaking on the move to donate the food items, one of the corps members, Desmond Dike, who spoke on behalf of others, said they decided to contribute their own quota to ease the pain in their host communities occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He stressed that the lockdown had impacted negatively on residents who were stopped from pursuing their sources of livelihood daily, which moved the corps members into doing things to show they  care.

“We had to come together to support our communities, having seen what our colleagues did in Agege, Ifako-Ijaiye, Oshodi-Isolo and Onigbongbo local governments. We want to also let our host communities know that we care and we understand what they are going  through during this period ,” Dike said.

Speaking on the presentation, the Local Government Inspector for Shomolu/Bariga, Adebola Odunayo, said the corps members, who  mobilised themselves to support their host communities, have done well and deserve a lot of commendation for their efforts, and hopefully would do more.

The Chairman of Shomolu Local Government Area, Mr. Abdul Salawu, represented by the leader of the house, Mr.Yemi Osikoya, commended the corps members and their efforts in cushioning the effect of hunger among the people.

“I saw on the news what other corps members had done in other local governments and was hoping to see same in our local government. Indeed, I am proud of these corps members who have done well to support the community, they deserve a lot of commendation, “Osikoya said
