The National Youth Service Corps in Lagos State has today sworn in 806 corps members to participate in National Service for a period of one year.
Speaking during the occasion, the State Coordinator, NYSC Lagos, Mr.Eddy Megwa appreciated the Governor of Lagos State for his continued support in ensuring that the scheme opens its gates to accommodate corps members after a rather difficult year.
Mr. Megwa said the efforts put in place by the scheme and the support gained from the State Government has made the Orientation camp to be certified free of COVID 19 by the NCDC.
The State Coordinator also appreciated the Governor for the commencement of perimeter fencing on the NYSC permanent orientation camp site in Ikorodu.
In the same vein, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Dr. Jimoh Yusuph in his address to the 2020 Batch 'B' stream IA, extolled the efforts of the corps members of the scheme serving in the health sector in the State for all the preventive and safety measures put in place to ensure the camp is COVID 19 free.
He however called on the new corps members to emulate the efforts of those serving, who have contributed immensely towards the eradication of the Coronavirus in the State.
'May I express my appreciation for the contributions and efforts made by corps members to help flatten the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic. Your predecessors went a long way in producing anti COVID 19 items like face masks, anti-bacteria hand wash, sanitizers, construction of COVID19 sample collection booth, as well as providing food palliatives to citizens of the State during the lockdown.
My government and the good people of Lagos State indeed appreciate this rare effort and contributions to the State,' he said.
Meanwhile, the Governor has harped on the State Coordinator's call on corps members to acquire skills while on camp so as to be self-reliant and financially viable.
Addressing corps members after the ceremony, the General Officer Commanding, 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Godwin Umelo called on them to be of good conduct while on camp and make use of their time judiciously in learning new things. As a generous support to the corps members, General Umelo promised to sponsor the Interplatoon Drills Competition to make the competition more interesting.
